I have a deep, intense love for Richard Marx. I own every album and listen to them ALL THE TIME.

Yes, you heard me correctly. The singer/songwriter that was intensely popular in the late 1980s and early 1990s is my favorite artist of all time. Some of his biggest hits include:

“Right Here Waiting” (easily his most popular single to date)
“Should’ve Known Better”
“Endless Summer Nights”
“Hold On to the Nights”

Isn’t he dreamy? (Stop laughing, I love him…plus it was the late 1980s so he is automatically forgiven)

Slightly better? (He is definitely aging…sad)

I guess you could blame my parents. I grew up listening to their music, and while some of my tastes have changed, my love for Richard Marx has never faltered. Every year when concert schedules are posted I keep hoping one day I will see his name on the list. You can GUARANTEE I will be in the front row bawling like a baby because I am, and will always be, his biggest fan.

Today he is a songwriter for popular artists such as Keith Urban, Justin Timberlake, Sister Hazel, and N Sync. He is also married to Cynthia Rhodes, who played Penny Johnson in Dirty Dancing.

For your viewing enjoyment:

I am not alone, right?

I know some of you have major crushes on popular 80s artists and still listen to to their albums today.

Wanna know what’s sad? My HR Manager has his EXACT 1980’s hairdo. No lie. I wish I had the guts to get a pic and send it to you. She (yes, I said she) has bright red hair and is stuck (digging her heals) in the 80’s.

I am going to be honest (and don’t disown me as a friend) I had no idea who he was! GASP! I know!! But I do know those songs so now I know the genius behind them :) FORGIVE me-ha

Oh my goodness I totally know what you are talking about. I grew up listening to all my parents music too, thus I know songs by Tears for Fears, Lionel Richie, WHAM, etc. all my friends thought I was a freak because I knew all the words to these bizarre songs. LOL.

You are so not alone on this one. I adore Richard Marx. (My hubby even likes him. ;)

Yeah, a few years ago when I was flying from Germany to the US, I sat about 3 rows behind Richard Marx — sooooo cool. Looking back, I wish I’d asked for his autograph, but I was too embarrassed at the time. LOVE him!!!!

We are twins! Love him. Greatest ballad singer ever. Now and Forever is one of my faves. And my favorite NSync song was one that he wrote. Hudson and I were jamming to Endless Summer Nights the other night during our 3 am feeding. Wish you could have joined us!

Did you know he is going to be at the Glass Cactus next month??

I loved his music, but no crush. Now those songs are in my head. Off to download them on the iPod.

I love Air Supply (from the late 70’s – 80’s) because my parents liked their music and I grew up listening to it. Not the coolest, but I love them just the same.

so you might disown me as a friend, but I did not even know who sang these songs until you posted this….. 80s Pop Culture FAIL!

i feel this same way about Hall & Oates, and I listen to their songs all the time! such classics! I have “I Can’t Go For That (No Can Do)” in one of my running playlists– AND a Simply Red song called “Sunrise” because it uses the same melody from “I Can’t Go For That”! I may be lame for hanging on to my love of certain 80’s music, but I don’t care!

I loved some Richard Marx and get a giddy feeling every time I hear his music! Right Here Waiting always reminds me of my first “boyfriend” and first kiss. He was older and my mom wouldn’t let me see him, so that was our song. So cheesy, I know.

15 Perfectly Imperfect 07.14.09 at 7:59 pm

So I totally hope we can still be friends, but I had no idea who this was!! It even took me a minute to think of the songs! Sucky I know.

I must say sometimes I wish guys still wore their hair like that…maybe they would be better to explain to me how to volumize my hair since girls never seem to be able to teach me haha.

17 tickledpink 07.14.09 at 11:11 pm

His music reminds me of the late night radio show “Delila!” He looked better with the 80’s hair than he does now. Wow, he is aging! That would be a fun show!

I feel the same way about Journey!

I have unfettered love for Richard. His duet with Donna Lewis (I owned her CD… what?!) on the Anastacia soundtrack, “At the Beginning,” is one of my all time favorite songs.

What a blast from the past! I remember my mom went to one of his concerts and bought me a shirt. He does have some good songs. I used to love those songs you listed so much!

21 Katie 07.15.09 at 1:29 pm

I totally have a couple of Mr. Marx’s songs on my ipod. One of my favorite songs of his is that River song…not sure what the name is…but it goes “I swear I left her by the river…” Ugg! Now it’s going to be in my head for the rest of the day.

22 Becky 07.16.09 at 1:02 pm

I love Richard Marx too-I have his greatest hits album and I am 28 years old -so what?!!!

I also love the Bangles – everytime they play Manic Monday I just want to jump up and down!

23 Jess @ The Finer Things 07.22.09 at 4:03 pm

I think you must be my long-lost twin! I LOVE Richard Marx! His songs are fabulous– but don’t forget “Father Figure” by George Micheals — possibly one of the best songs of the 80s :-)

24 KatherineBee 07.31.09 at 2:11 pm @KatherineBee

When I was 8 I was convinced that Right Here Waiting would be the first dance song at my waiting. Then I grew up and found out that it would actually be a very depressing pick. I was devastated.
