chocolate for breakfast?

nutella

Has anyone seen the commercial where a mom is serving toast doused in Nutella for breakfast, her children salivating all over the chocolaty goodness while she smiles at them with pure pride and joy?

The mother’s voice over is the icing on the cake:

As a mom, I’m a great believer in Nutella, a delicious hazelnut spread that I use to get my kids to eat healthy foods. I spread a little on all kinds of healthy things, like multi-grain toast. Every jar has wholesome, quality ingredients, like hazelnuts, skim milk, and a hint of delicious cocoa. And Nutella has no artificial colors or preservatives. It’s quick. It’s easy. And at breakfast, I can use all the help I can get.

Does anyone else see a problem with this?

Is it delicious? Hell yes.
Does it make even cardboard edible? Absolutely.
Would pancakes, toast, waffles, and crepes be bland without it? Obviously.
Could I eat it straight from the jar with my finger? Ummmm, what do you think I am doing right now?

I am a self-proclaimed foodie and chocoholic, but even I know that chocolate hazelnut spread similar in consistency and texture to peanut butter is NOT a HEALTHY and WHOLESOME breakfast option.

Over half of the calories in a single serving come from fat (and not the good kind despite the hazelnuts).

FAIL, Nutella. Fail.

nutella is amazing. at the sky clubs in various airports – they now have little single serving packets of nutella that you can put on biscotti cookies. i try to stay away, but it’s impossible.

however – i’m with you. nutella does not a nutritious breakfast make! :)

I’ve always tried to resist the temptation of Nutella and I was successful until last year.

Now I’m craving it big time after reading your post….

You seriously took the words straight from my mouth… or the thoughts straight from my head. In either case, I agree completely.

4 LPC 10.14.09 at 11:31 am

I had the exact same reaction. I mean, clearly they think we are stupid. But just HOW stupid?

5 Becca 10.14.09 at 11:31 am @becca107

I agree! I do love Nutella though… mmm!

6 JennyLo 10.14.09 at 11:36 am

Oh but its soooo gooood! My mouth waters just looking at the jar.

7 c'est yeux bruns 10.14.09 at 11:36 am

God. I am always tempted to buy a jar whenever I see it near the peanut butter but I know my ass would sit down and eat the whole damn thing in one sitting, complete with some nilla wafers for dipping. Can I get an amen?

But this reminded me of BIll Cosby’s 1983 stand up routine in which he discusses that giving his children chocolate cake for breakfast is a viable option because, well, it has milk and eggs in it! Ergo, wholesome and nutritious!

Oh my gosh, I always think the same thing!!! Doesn’t this stuff have a ton of calories??

9 Whitney 10.14.09 at 11:43 am

I saw this commercial just last night and I was thinking the same thing. Mostly I was trying to determine what kind of OTC cold medicine she would have to be on in order to serve that to her children as a “nutritious” breakfast. Or a nutritious *anything* for that matter!

10 Starry-Eyed Barefoot Bride 10.14.09 at 11:47 am

They should market it as a preservative free treat… a better alternative to peeps or whatever.. but healthy? I WISH! We absolutely do not keep it in the house because I will eat it all… i mean the whole thing… in a day. I love/hate my friend who introduced this to me!! nom nom nom!

11 Jenna 10.14.09 at 11:51 am @jennacole

That line about “multi-grain toast” kills me every time. Like spreading something non-nutritious on something really nutritions can make up for the artery clogging goodness.

12 Tara Gibson 10.14.09 at 12:07 pm

agreed on all counts.. this stuff is amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!

13 Ashley 10.14.09 at 12:17 pm

haha, i agree! i thinks it’s funny that they say it has a “hint” of cocoa. are you kidding me? have you SEEN the color of the stuff? That is not the color of skim milk and hazelnuts with a HINT of cocoa!

14 Suburban Princess 10.14.09 at 12:19 pm

Oh cmon! That’s just mean :O( I love Nutella!
And it doesnt have any more fat and cals than peanut butter!

15 Cee 10.14.09 at 12:19 pm

Yea that is a weird commercial…it reminds me of that ovaltine one that they always show in the winter.

16 Miss Type A 10.14.09 at 12:20 pm

haha I had the same reaction…I was like….what?! I love Nutella, believe me, but for kids? for breakfast? Come on…

17 AEOT 10.14.09 at 12:25 pm

B and I were talking about this the other day. Not only is it NOT nutritious (it can’t even claim protein like PB can!) and full of fat, I love the fact that she says she can put it on anything. I mean, really?? Anything??? Um….are you adding it to cereal? eggs? bacon?? No, you are not, which means that you can’t put it on anything, and it is not healthy. So, basically, the whole commercial is one big fat lie. I didn’t need the commercial to tell me its good (I already know that- yum!), but I also don’t need commercials that are just flat out wrong.

18 Allison 10.14.09 at 12:36 pm

Yes! I saw this commercial the other day and thought, seriously?? They are trying to pass off Nutella as a healthy breakfast option? ha! Don’t get me wrong…I love Nutella…but healthy? Probably not.

19 PinkSass 10.14.09 at 1:18 pm

I have been wondering if Nutella was good for you. Sad day that it isn’t because it looks so good!

20 Emily 10.14.09 at 1:20 pm

Glorious, delicious fail.

21 Lauren Kelly 10.14.09 at 1:30 pm @www.twitter.com/lkelly56

And that my friend is brilliant marketing on their part, because I bet you over half of America is buying into this, haha!!! :)

22 Ally 10.14.09 at 1:32 pm

I loooove Nutella, but, that commercial bugs the hell out of me “it’s how I get my kids to eat healthy things, like whole grain bread”–um, in my house it was called “eat the damn bread or starve”–not “let me bribe you with chocolate”. I love me some Nutella, but, I have a big problem with that ad because it’s basically showing a mom giving her kids chocolate in exchange for eating the “healthy whole grain bread”. If we give kids whole grain and healthy foods from the start, that’s what they’ll want to eat…. Or at least, that’s how it was in my house and I’m so grateful for it. Although, I did hate my mom for never letting me have Pop Tarts….(I didn’t really hate her, I just wanted to be cool like the other kids with Pop Tarts)

PS. Had Einstein’s for breakfast and thought of you :)

23 Piper Jacquelyn 10.14.09 at 2:03 pm @piperjacquelyn

I always think the same thing when I see that ad on television. I would have eaten loads of breakfast as well if my mother would have fed me Nutella. And probably weighed about 400 pounds by age 13 as well. I love it so…

24 Windy City Kelley's 10.14.09 at 2:27 pm

Funny you mention this, I’ve never actually tried this stuff, but the commercial kind of makes me want to go out and get some. Maybe I’ll stay away for a little bit longer though :)

25 Tracy 10.14.09 at 2:38 pm

OMG I LOVE LOVE LOVE this stuff! I never tried it before we went to Germany in September this year and have been meaning to see if any of my local stores sell it here – it was SOOOOO GOOD! Thanks for reminding me! :o )

26 mrs. smith 10.14.09 at 3:35 pm @mrssmith909

i honestly don’t like this stuff, but even if i did i would never consider it to be healthy. it’s no better than saying reese’s are healthy.

27 Linda 10.14.09 at 4:08 pm

It just looks so gross to me.

28 amy 10.14.09 at 5:56 pm @xoxoamyo

Wow, I must be missing something bc I have never tried it – I have seen the commerical though and thought it was odd…

29 Ali 10.14.09 at 8:35 pm

I have often thought the exact thing while watching those commercials! I would also like to know what other healthy things you can spread Nutella on besides whole grain bread? Celery? ewe

30 Julie @ Wearing Mascara 10.14.09 at 10:13 pm

I saw this commercial and was stunned. In a way, I believed it for a second thinking… “Oh, wow! It must be nutritious. I should buy some RIGHT NOW.” Then, I came back to reality. Definitely a fail!

31 Nani 10.15.09 at 12:41 am

It must be an Italian thing, but I grew up having sweet breakfasts, and lots of them involved Nutella with fruits, toast, pancakes, crepes, etc, you name it…

I am still VERY addicted to it :)

32 Julia 10.15.09 at 9:18 am

One of the funnier things I’ve read in a magazine was in a “Parenting” magazine just recently. Advice from an anonymous pre-school teacher: “Chocolate milk, a Nutella sandwich, and oreos aren’t a wholesome lunch. It’s a mini dessert bar.”

33 emily 10.19.09 at 10:19 am

i say the exact same thing every time i see that commercial. and especially when shes like “i serve it on all kinds of healthy things.” should we insert {because it is not healthy on its own} haha but yes, especially because i lived in italy a year ago…damn is it good!! :) haha

34 Megan 10.20.09 at 9:21 am

ths is so true..but it is so damn good!! Katie Lee Joel is supposed to be making Nutella banana french toast on the early show…I want to see…and eat it…

35 Sweet N Lo 10.26.09 at 6:00 pm

I completely agree with you. Everytime I see the commerical I ask out loud, “are you kidding me??” Nutella is a surefire way to gain a good 15 pounds. However I will admit to indulging in nutella gelato in Italy…and yes, I’m pretty sure I gained 5 pounds over there.
