7. Consumerism
In your pictures you always look so fashionable. Is this how you dress on a daily basis? If not, what does your normal workweek attire look like?
Five out of seven days a week I dress like a hobo. No joke. I look like I just came from the gym or rolled out of bed. I typically wear sweat pants or yoga pants, a t-shirt or long-sleeved cotton shirt, Uggs or running shoes, and a fleece or cotton jacket to work…everyday…without fail.
Oh and my hair is always wet when I leave my house. And you can forget about make-up.
On Friday and Saturday nights I try to look like a normal girl. Usually I wear jeans and a fun top from places like J. Crew, Ann Taylor Loft, Banana Republic, or Nordstrom. If I am feeling really adventurous I put on a dress.
Where are your favorite places to shop and find hidden gems?
Hidden gems? HAHAHAHAH. That’s funny. I never shop for clothes so I have absolutely no idea where to find hidden gems BUT if you know a great place, please feel free to pass on that information!
What outfit do you feel the prettiest in?
A form fitting dress when I’ve actually decided to curl my hair, put on make-up, and brave stilettos.
What is your favorite outfit?
Do fleece pants and a sweatshirt count? No? Then I love any of my cotton J. Crew summer dresses and my Seven jeans with a casual top.
If money weren’t an object, is there a splurge or something you’d spend it on? Like on you–really expensive new car or a daily massage?
Diamonds. I can’t help it. I love bling. I’d also splurge on a housekeeper.
Who is your favorite jewelry designer? Besides Harry Winston….
David Yurman. But I also must say I’m not a big fan of Harry Winston. I much prefer Cartier.
What are you favorite beauty products?
Once again, I find this question hilarious. Beauty products + me = oil + water. We just don’t mesh. I leave all the beauty product talk to other fabulous bloggers that actually know what the hell is going on (SLynnRo, Kate at Elefantitas Alegres, Maggie at Freckled Citizen, Pretty in Pink Megan, My Brunette Reality, Blue-Eyed Bride, According to Nina).
In all seriousness, I am really not the person to ask about this. Heck, I can’t even apply make-up (don’t let my blog pictures fool you). I have absolutely no favorite beauty products except for maybe my perfume (I wear either Fresh Fig Apricot or Sugar Lychee). Does that count?
How do you get your hair looking so gorgeous?
After drying it, I throw my hair up in hot rollers for 10 minutes. I take out the curlers and shake the curls loose. I add some light hair spray.
When I say I am no fuss, total basics kind of girl, I genuinely mean it.
What is your favorite collectible besides Mojito stuff?
I collect Hard Rock Café shot glasses, wine corks, all types of glassware (I have enough sets of glasses that I could serve a party of 150 and everyone would have a glass…no joke), and Story People pictures.
What kind of car do you and your husband drive?
Contrary to rumor and popular belief, I do NOT drive a Lexus, BMW, Mercedes, or any other luxury vehicle. I drive a 1998 rusted-top red Nissan Sentra named Betty (after Betty Boop). I ADORE my car.
Yes, she’s old. But she’s got spunk. I love her.
The car was a present from my parents for my sixteenth birthday. I will continue to drive it until the engine falls out.
Mr. Mojito drives a 2000 Chevy Malibu that was also a gift for his sixteenth birthday. I think he may love his car more than he loves me. It’s rather sad actually.
8. Where’s Waldo?
Where would you like to travel to for an extended vacation?
Greece, Napa Valley, Spain, ST. JOHN!!!!
When are you headed back to the East Coast so you’ll be on my coast and I can meet you?
I promise next time I am on the East Coast I will let you know and we WILL meet up!!
If you could go anywhere in the world, money is no object, where would you go? How long would you stay there? What would you see/do? Who would you take with you?
Wow. Tough question. Can I take the cop-out answer and say I would spend several years traveling the world going anywhere and everywhere? I’d take Mr. Mojito and Oliver Pancake with me.
9. Life with Mr. Mojito
How did Mr. Mojito propose?
In May 2007, he took me on a gondola ride touring the Las Colinas canals. He placed a message in a bottle in the canal. When I retrieved it from the water, he told me to open it. The message was a love letter to me. When I finished reading the letter, Mr. Mojito got down on one knee in the gondola and asked me to join Team Mojito for life.
How did you meet Mr. Mojito?
Have I mentioned that the Mojitos are a bunch of math nerds? Well we are. BIG TIME.
I fell in love with Mr. Mojito over math equations. I met him the first day of senior year of college. He sat next to me in a math class. As the class progressed, we started studying together. Eventually he asked me out on a date. The rest is history.
What is Mr. Mojito’s occupation?
We are BOTH Systems Engineers for different government defense contractors.
10. Food for Thought
What is your favorite meal or food item and why?
Favorite meal: Risotto. It’s just a bunch of creamy, delicious goodness.
Favorite food item: Cheese or Toblerone. Neither need any explanantion.
Who cooks more in your house? You or Mr. Mojito? What are your go to dishes? Or do you guys mostly eat out?
Confession: We eat out ALL THE TIME. It’s something I genuinely enjoy so we budget for it. BUT, if we do cook in, I am usually the chef and Mr. Mojito cleans up my messes.
Pretty much any of Giada De Laurentiis, Ina Garten, and Tyler Florence’s recipes are my go-to dishes. I have all of their cook books and use them every time I prepare a meal. They haven’t let me down yet.
What would you eat for your last meal?
Risotto and chocolate. Oh, and mojitos of course!
What’s your favorite recipe?
My favorite recipe is my mother’s Mexican Stuffed Shells that she created on a whim:
Ingredients:
1 pound ground beef
1 medium-sized yellow onion finely chopped
1 packet taco seasoning
1 package of cream cheese
1 box of jumbo pasta shells
1 10 oz. or 16 oz. can enchilada sauce (mild, medium, or hot) depending on how much sauce you like
1 bunch scallions diced
1 package Mexican cheese blend
Diced tomato for garnish
Directions:
Cook the jumbo shell pasta in boiling water. Drain when al dente. Set aside to cool.
Sautee onions and beef in a skillet over medium-high heat. When the onions are translucent and the meat is cooked through, add the packet of taco seasoning. Stir well. Add the entire package of cream cheese and allow it to melt into the beef mixture. Allow the mixture to cool.
Then stuff a heaping spoonful of the beef mixture into one of the cooked jumbo shells. Place the filled shell in a baking dish. Repeat this process until all of the beef mixture is gone.
On top of the shells in the baking dish pour the enchilada sauce. Sprinkle the diced tomato and scallion on top of the shells. Cover the shells with Mexican cheese.
Bake on 350 degree for 30-40 minutes until the shells are warm in the center and the cheese is melted.
11. The Fit Train: Weight Watchers
Did you combine the program with lots of exercise?
Yes, I worked out 4-5 days per week. I typically did an hour of cardio followed by 30 minutes of weight lifting. I would also alternate days of cardio and weights.
Did you eat the horribly-diet-y food…or did you just monitor your portions with “normal food”?
Admittedly, I did eat diet-y food. I am an all or nothing kind of girl. I knew I would never be successful eating smaller portions of my favorite meals. BUT once a week I did have a major splurge meal and racked up the points and calories.
Have you had success maintaining your weightloss?
Yes and no. My weight fluctuates. Right now I am 7 pounds over my goal weight. BUT when I follow the WW program, I lose weight ridiculously fast. On the other hand, if I stop counting points and start eating whatever I want, the weight piles back on.
What is your favorite diet food?
100 calorie Smart Pop Kettle Corn Popcorn. I also love sugar free Jell-O!

Hi there, just thought I would say hi and let you know I have been casually creepin’ on your blog for sometime now and love it!! Your story was great, and these questions are fun too
PS. I think your attitude about not having children simply because you don’t want to is somewhat inspiring – my sister feels that way and its nice to hear shes not the only one! Happy Thursday!
Your mom’s mexican shells sound super yummy! I am going to try them!
I’ve been a lurker for a little while now too, but I just wanted to comment and say that I’m really digging these Q and A posts! It’s so easy to assume things about people but I love that you are getting to set the record straight and that us readers are getting to know more about the real you! Kudos from a fellow Math nerd and no muss no fuss kind’ve gal!
YAY for you dispelling the absurd myth that you guys drive souped-up luxury vehicles. Sweet 16 cars FOREVA!
Amen to the 100 calorie kettle corn–that gets me through the day. There was a slight crisis yesterday when my bag o popcorn decided NOT to pop at all. Sad times. And then I was hungry.
Oh, memories. My first car was a 1996 Nissan 200SX (2-door version of the Sentra) and it was a manual. I hate a love/hate relationship with Rinny Tin Tinny (that’s what I called her), but man I did mostly love her. Unfortunately, I let a friend borrow her in college in an emergency-ish sort of situation, and she got forced of I-75 into a guardrail by a semi. Thankfully, friend was okay, but I had to say goodbye to Rinny Tin Tinny. I then ended up with a Ford Explorer Sport, and I will NEVER AGAIN buy an American vehicle. My Nissan was SO MUCH BETTER, even though it could be argued that hte Explorer was nicer. Now, I just bought a 4Runner and I LOVE IT. Looooooooove. But, I wish I still had the 200SX to zoom around town in… if I’m in Dallas, I’m calling you so I can drive your Sentra.
I’m loving these Q&A posts! Thanks for being so honest and real.
You know that TC and I are both still driving our cars that we got in high school, too. Why have a car payment? No need!
And I’m with you… I struggle on WW if I don’t eat Smart Ones or Lean Cuisines. I get one splurge day, but I need to know EXACTLY what the points are and not tempt myself.
Here’s hoping the weight falls off again!
So since you’re hell bent on beating down these rumors that you’re a pretentious snob, does proving other people’s misconceptions make you feel better? Do you feel more superior because you don’t care about fashion, beauty, and luxury?
Because frankly I make fun of people like you. If you really dress the way you say you do, I would think you were pathetic and need a self-esteem boost.
Wow, Anonymous. What is wrong with you? Does that make you feel good about yourself?
Don’t get me wrong, I honestly enjoy getting dressed up to go out.
However, I live in sweats at home. It is the first thing I do when I get home. And if I could get away with it, I would totally rock them at work.
Anonymous you seriously have issues and should find some much needed therapy.
I love your Q&As and I would totally wear sweats if I could every day. Good for you girl!!!
We have our 1994 Nissan Sentra that we bought right after we got married. Paint is peeling, headliner is coming down, the heat & AC don’t work, there are no dash lights and there is a hole in the gas tank. BUT…it still gets 35-38 miles per gallon.
Love you!!! XOXO
Well clearly I am in the wrong industry because I would L-O-V-E to go to work in that attire every day. Getting dressed up for work every day takes the fun out of dressing for the weekends and it makes it seem like your job. I definitely am jealous of this perk!! Seriously, it means less damage to your hair, and face because you don’t have to wear make-up or put product in your hair. And we all know this is definitely a plus for blondes. and for me personally, this would help my oil spill of a face to go without make-up. It really must be nice. I’m jealous MM. Really. And anyone who says they’re not, is lyin’.
i love that you have your first car still! so do i
his name is harry (the honda).my papa bought him for me on my 16th birthday(i’m 30 now) and i will drive him until he gives out on me! i don’t want a car payment, the car runs great and i don’t need to drive my money!
i would 100% wear sweats/uggs/no makeup everyday if i could. i practically do already. anyone who says they wouldn’t probably has their own self esteem issues.
and really… people that bash others for no good reason are the ones who are pathetic.
i wonder if “anonymous” feels more superior when leaving anonymous shitty comments.
although i follow you on twitter i am new to your blog and i am eager to read SIBU and your older posts
i’m sure harry and betty would be fast friends
I second Sam word for word!
Good call on the maid. If I could afford it I would totally have a maid so I could have more time for fun!
I love that you keep it real.
Anon commenter, your’e an ass, and don’t stand behind your thoughts.
We love you MM (insert giggle because I know)
I’m with you – A maid would be my splurge. I love Tiffany jewelry, but that’s always going to be an occasional thing. A regular maid would be amazing.
As would being allowed to wear sweatpants to work. Personally, I’m a jeans girl, but if I could get out of these awful dress pants every day, I’d be happy as a lark.
Nissans are great cars. We just got rid of my pathfinder this summer with the cash for clunkers program. It was on its last leg and had over 200,000 miles and we got more than it was worth. I miss it though! Love your blog and your openness!
Although I follow you on Twitter, I only sporadically read your blog. I check in once every couple of weeks. Until you posted these FAQs, I didn’t really have a good “feel” for you, but now I REALLY like you! You are down to earth and funny. I’ll definitely be stopping by more often now. Thanks so much for being so open and honest with us.
Oh yeah, I am having a fun beauty giveaway on my blog. It’s super low maintenance (mascara). = )
It amazes me the amount of assumptions people make about someone they don’t even know. I have loved the Q&A posts. Thanks for being so real and honest. Its good to see other people in the blog world who are down to earth and easy going. I love your blog
I am totally trying that recipe – sounds like a good one for our Friday night-in!
YAY for no car payments! If my ‘83 Volvo hadn’t bit the bucket, I’d still be driving that sweet boxcar everywhere – I loved that car…
That shell recipe sounds ridiculously yummy!
I think I may love you even more now.. I also always leave the house with my hair wet. Isn’t that what the car has a heater/ac/blowdryer for?! And beauty products?! I don’t even know what kind of soap we use. The hubs buys it. Ay yi yi.
And I will drive my VW bug til it dies. Or until the kid on the way makes me buy a four door in which I will sob like a four year old for days.
i can’t wait to see that hott new bling on your hand
YAY
Thanks so much for answering the questions
I’m totally loving that recipe of your moms! i will be making it very soon, thanks!
